LifeLab – European Researchers’ Night

Be part of Europe’s biggest extravaganza celebrating public engagement with research

Would you like to be part of Europe’s biggest extravaganza celebrating public engagement with research? LifeLab returns to Ely, Peterborough and Cambridge on 27th and 28th September 2019! The event is part of European Researchers’ Night, a Europe-wide celebration of the contribution of research to society. We’re calling on staff from across Wellcome Genome Campus to get involved and show off their amazing work to people in Ely, Peterborough and Cambridge.

Whether you’ve got a great idea for a new activity or want to use an existing activity, LifeLab has plenty of opportunities for you to get involved and share your research with the public. Please fill in our online form to let us know what you’d like to do.

Below are some of the events that you can take part in. We’d also love to hear from you if you have your own ideas for activities and events.

Hands-on activities

Ely Cathedral, Friday 27th September 7 pm – 9 pm and Saturday 28th September 10 am – 5 pm.

We’ll be in Ely with a range of hands-on activities to engage adults and families. There’s plenty of space for anyone who may have their own activity they’d like to take to this event.

Queensgate Shopping Centre, Peterborough, Saturday 28th September, 12 pm – 5 pm.

Take part in our pop-up lab in the heart of Peterborough’s main shopping centre. Whether you want to extract DNA from strawberries, demonstrate your microscopy skills or bring along your own activity, there’s plenty of chance to show what life in the lab looks like!

Grafton Shopping Centre, Cambridge, Saturday 28th September, 12 pm – 5 pm.

We’ll be in one of the main shopping centres in Cambridge so it’s a great opportunity to discuss your research with people and bring your activities for them to get hands-on with science and technology.

Cambridge Science Centre, Friday 27th September 7pm – 9 pm (adults only) and Saturday 28th September 10.30 am – 5 pm

Get hands-on with science at two special events at the Cambridge Science Centre:

  • Friday evening is an adults-only event with a chance to engage people with your research over a beer and pizza.
  • On Saturday we’re opening the centre to families for a chance to interact with scientists and find out about cutting-edge bioscience research. Anyone with their own activities is welcome to come along.

If you would like to be involved in any of these events please let us know in our online form.

LifeLab is a collaboration led by Wellcome Genome Campus Public Engagement with Sanger Institute, EMBL-EBI, University of Cambridge, Babraham Institute and MRC-LMB to bring European Researchers Night to Cambridge and Peterborough. This is one of four successful projects funded in the UK and one of 55 across the whole of Europe. This is the first time Cambridge has hosted this event and, as part of our project, LifeLab, we will be bringing hands-on science to people who might not normally visit events such as Cambridge Science Festival.
