PhD and predoc student poster competition!

Enter our public engagement poster competition to celebrate 25 years of the Wellcome Genome Campus

This competition is now closed. We will be announcing the winners on July 21st.

Can you explain your PhD in a poster? PhD and predoc students across the campus are invited to enter our public engagement poster competition to celebrate 25 years of the Wellcome Genome Campus. The posters will be displayed as part of the anniversary event on 21st July at the Conference Centre.

This is a fantastic opportunity to show off your poster-designing skills and to creatively engage the public with your work! Submitted posters will be displayed as part of the event on July 21st where we will announce the overall competition winners.  You are still able to enter the competition even if you cannot attend the event.

First prize is an all-expenses paid trip for two to the New Scientist Live event in September in London, as well as an iPad. Two runners up will also win iPads.

To enter, download the relevant poster template from the links at the bottom of this page and get creative! Your poster must be suitable for a non-scientific audience, so have a think about who you’d like to engage and why. For example, do you want to start discussions with patient groups affected by a genetic condition? Maybe you’d like to inspire schoolchildren, or show off the latest scientific technological advances to gadget enthusiasts?

The competition is open to anyone currently enrolled as a PhD or predoc student at the Sanger Institute or EMBL-EBI and based on the Wellcome Genome Campus.

Email your finished poster as a print-ready pdf (A0 size) to engage@wellcomeconnectingscience.org by 5 pm on Friday 22nd June.

When you submit your poster, please state the audience the poster has been made for.

Need some advice?

If you’d like some advice or feedback on your poster before you submit it, the public engagement team is always on hand to give you some expert advice. Drop us an email at engage@wellcomeconnectingscience.org or come by our office (B229-A Sulston) and we’d be happy to help.

Judging criteria

The posters will be judged by a panel, including representatives from the public and public engagement professionals. Remember, keep your poster relevant to the work you are doing on your PhD.

The posters will also be judged on:

  • Content: Have you used clear language that is accessible for a non-scientific audience? Is the content suitable for the intended audience?  Does it explain the ‘what’ ‘why’ and ‘how’ of your project?
  • Visuals: Is your poster eye-catching? Does it make good use of colour and imagery to get the message across? Have you used the correct poster template?
