School Visits

Inspiring experiences at the cutting-edge of genomics for schools and educational groups

We are delighted to announce that we will be reopening for School visits to the Campus from October 2021 for UK Secondary Schools.

As Covid is still with us we are taking a cautious approach for the first few months of reopening and group sizes will be limited to 15 students. From January 2022 we hope to be able to increase group sizes to 30 students, circumstances allowing.

We aim to offer an inspiring and inclusive experience for all schools and groups visiting the Wellcome Genome Campus.  We offer year-round opportunities to visit and explore the Campus and discuss the latest topics in genomics with staff.

We are currently able to offer a two to three hour trip on Wednesdays for UK State Secondary School, Sixth Forms and Colleges.

A typical visit can include:

  • An introduction to DNA, gene and genomes and research on campus
  • A presentation from a member(s) of campus staff
  • A classroom-based activity
  • A visit to the Open Lab and opportunity to see the one of the world's largest DNA sequencing facility

We are always happy to tailor the visits to meet the needs of your group, please contact us to discuss this.

Booking a visit to the campus

The Education and Learning team strives to place inclusion, equality and social justice at the centre of our work.

We therefore will prioritise our support for schools in areas of high deprivation, with a high proportion of students in receipt of pupil premium, and in areas of low social mobility. Due to the high number of requests for school visits to campus, we will review each request on a case-by-case basis, with priority being given to those schools in underserved communities. We are therefore unable to offer onsite visits for independent school, non-UK schools, and universities this academic year. These groups are however invited to take part in our online programmes, such as our Genomics Lite programme for upper secondary students.

We have identified schools located in the East Midlands and East of England that meet these criteria and will therefore be prioritised for Campus Visits (see eligible schools document below). If your school is not on this list but you believe it meets our eligibility criteria,  get in touch at: education@wellcomeconnnectingscience.org.

Any decisions on visits by groups outside of the eligibility criteria will be made at the discretion of the Education and Learning Manager and will be dependent on our capacity.
